The Park of Croatian Defenders (Croatian: Park hrvatskih branitelja) is located on the site of the former Fortress, which was gradually demolished during the 19th century.
The design of today's park began at the end of the second half of the 19th century with the initiative of teacher Stjepan Posezi, who together with his students planted a school garden around the "Old School" building (today's City Museum).
The city park got its present form at the beginning of the 20th century, when it was designed according to the plan and under the supervision of botany professor Vitislav Durhanek.
It is interesting that this is the same professor who, together with Antun Heinz, designed the Botanical Garden in Zagreb.
In the city park, it is possible to notice the features of both French and English types of park.
